Where these questions come from

Original practice questions written for this site. Not the official question bank. They were written against the current Victoria road rules for riders, with the rule cited under every answer. VicRoads does not publish a motorcycle question bank, so nothing on this page is the wording you will meet in the sitting.

Questions and pass mark: Being verified. No question count or pass mark for the rider knowledge test in Victoria has been confirmed against VicRoads, so this page does not state one.

  1. Question 1

It starts to rain after several dry weeks. When is the road most slippery?

    • After several hours of steady rain
    • In the first few minutes, when the water lifts oil and rubber off the surfaceCorrect answer
    • Only once the rain stops
    • Rain does not change grip on a sealed road

Light rain on a dry road floats the built up oil and dust into a thin film. Grip is at its worst then, so slow right down and give the rain time to wash the surface clean.

  2. Question 2

You are riding across an exposed bridge in a strong crosswind. What is the best technique?

    • Grip the bars as tightly as you can and hold the bike rigid
    • Slow down, relax your grip and arms, and be ready for the wind to stop when you reach shelterCorrect answer
    • Speed up to spend less time on the bridge
    • Sit as upright and tall as possible to steady the bike

A rigid grip transmits every gust into the steering. Reduce speed, stay loose, and expect a push the other way as you pass into the shelter of a building, embankment or truck.

Rule cited: Victorian Rider Handbook, topic: wind and weather

  3. Question 3

You are about to overtake a large truck on a windy day. What should you expect?

    • Smooth air the whole way past
    • Turbulence and a sudden push as you leave the shelter of the truckCorrect answer
    • The truck will slow to help you
    • Nothing different from overtaking a car

A big vehicle drags a pocket of disturbed air behind and beside it. Allow extra room, hold a steady throttle and be ready for the buffeting as you come alongside and again as you clear the front.

Rule cited: Victorian Rider Handbook, topic: wind and weather

  4. Question 4

How does getting cold on a long winter ride affect a rider?

    • It has no effect as long as you keep moving
    • Reaction time slows and grip strength and fine control drop off, often before you noticeCorrect answer
    • It improves concentration
    • It only affects riders without a windscreen

Cold hands cannot work a brake lever properly and a cold rider makes slower decisions. Dress for the wind chill, and stop and warm up rather than pushing on.

Rule cited: Victorian Rider Handbook, topic: fatigue and conditions

  5. Question 5

Why do riders tire faster than drivers on a long trip?

    • Motorcycles have less comfortable seats and nothing else matters
    • Wind pressure, noise, vibration and constant balancing all add upCorrect answer
    • Riders drink less water than drivers
    • They do not, riders and drivers tire at the same rate

Riding is physical work in a way driving is not. Plan a proper break at least every two hours, drink water, and treat the first signs of fatigue as a reason to stop rather than push through.

Rule cited: Victorian Rider Handbook, topic: fatigue
