Where these questions come from

Service SA does not publish the SA theory test question bank. The 120 questions here are original practice questions written for this site against the current South Australia road rules, with the rule cited on every answer. They are not the official questions and nothing on this page says otherwise.

The road sign questions, and the sign artwork with them, were written and drawn for this site as well.

The numbers that decide the day

Each figure below names where it came from and when it was last checked. Anything we have not checked ourselves says so rather than guessing.

The SA ladder, in order

Work down it. Each stage says how big it is before you commit to anything in it.

The essentials

Start here: numbered sets that between them cover the pool once without repeating a question, the whole pool in one sitting, and a short check to find your weak topics. 6 tests, 10 to 120 questions

Harder situations and road signs

Intersections, roundabouts, lane rules and the signs people read the wrong way round. 8 tests, 8 to 25 questions

The rules that carry penalties

Speed, alcohol and drugs, phones, restraints, pedestrians and parking, which cost drivers more marks than they expect. 6 tests, 8 to 9 questions

The exam simulator

The real shape of the sitting, in its own sections, with answers held back to the end. 1 test, 50 questions

The challenge deck

Every question you answer wrong on this site goes into one deck kept in this browser, car and motorcycle together, with nothing sent anywhere and no account behind it.

How the SA theory test runs

The South Australian theory test comes in two parts. Part one is eight give way questions and all eight have to be correct. Part two is 42 questions with 32 correct to pass. After the theory test South Australia splits again: either the one off Vehicle On Road Test, or competency based training and assessment recorded in a logbook with an accredited instructor.

  • Part one, give way rules, 8 questions8 correct to pass, with no margin
  • Part two, general road rules, 42 questions32 correct to pass

Where SA learners come unstuck

Part one has no margin at all. Eight give way questions, eight correct answers, and the intersection diagrams are the reason most people repeat it.
