SA car tests

South Australia writes its filtering permission around named licence classes, R and R-Date, rather than the phrase full licence, and its list of places a rider cannot filter includes roundabouts. The R-Date class carries a 19 year minimum age, 12 months on the learner permit and 2 years before unrestricted R is added at renewal without another test. The original questions here are built around those class names and periods, cited to The Rider's Handbook and the road rules. Service SA publishes no rider question bank.

Where these questions come from

Service SA does not publish a motorcycle question bank. The 70 questions here are original practice questions written for this site against the current South Australia road rules for riders, with the rule cited on every answer. They are not the official questions and nothing on this page says otherwise.

The road sign questions, and the sign artwork with them, were written and drawn for this site as well.

The SA rider test format

Not checked against Service SA, so the figures stay blank. What that means is on the motorcycle index.

Why seven of the eight rider formats are blank here

Filtering by R and R-Date class

South Australia grants lane filtering to riders in the R and R-Date classes. The speed must remain under 30 km/h, the movement must be safe and there must be enough clearance between vehicles. Learner permit holders and P1 riders cannot filter. It is the only jurisdiction that states the permission through named licence classes rather than the phrase full licence.

The South Australian exclusions name school zones, pedestrian crossings, children's crossings, parked cars, the space between a vehicle and the edge of the road, and roundabouts. The clearance requirement remains relevant even where none of the named location bans applies.

Read it at the source

We could not open the South Australian licensing page from here on 3 September 2026, so read the lane filtering rule there yourself before you rely on it.

Moving from R-Date to unrestricted R

Minimum age. An R-Date rider must be at least 19 years old.

Learner permit period. The rider must have held an R-Date learner permit for at least 12 months.

Motorcycle restriction. The R-Date class is limited to learner approved motorcycles.

Unrestricted class. After 2 years on R-Date, the unrestricted R class is added at the next licence renewal without another test.

The motorcycle limit attached to R-Date

Learner approved motorcycle status remains the vehicle boundary for the whole R-Date period. No South Australian capacity, power or output figure has been checked here. The restriction is therefore best remembered by its connection to the named R-Date class and its 2-year period before unrestricted R is added at renewal.

Anchor answers to South Australian class names

Base filtering decisions on R and R-Date eligibility first, then check the under-30 km/h limit, available clearance and the named prohibited place. That order prevents the permission for an R-Date rider from being confused with the ban applying to an R-Date learner permit holder or a P1 rider.

No South Australian rider test name, question count or pass mark has been confirmed, so this page states none. Concentrate on what is known: the 19-year minimum, 12 months on the R-Date learner permit, 2 years on R-Date and addition of unrestricted R at the next renewal without a further test.

Two things mark South Australia out in this comparison. It is the only jurisdiction that writes the filtering permission around named licence classes, R and R-Date, instead of the phrase full licence, and it excludes both the learner permit holder and the P1 rider by name. It also lists roundabouts among the banned places, so pair the clearance requirement between vehicles with the roundabout ban when you rehearse a South Australian answer.
