WA car tests

Western Australia publishes the longest filtering prohibition list of the eight and the only fixed penalty for breaching it, a $100 fine and 2 demerit points. It also names figures the others leave out: 150 kilowatts per tonne and 660cc for a combustion learner motorcycle, 25 kilowatts for an electric one, and 22.5 tonnes for the heavy vehicles a rider cannot filter between. The original questions here are written around those figures and the Computerised Theory Test, Hazard Perception Test and Practical Driving Assessment sequence, cited to the Ride Safe handbook and the Road Traffic Code 2000 (WA). The Department of Transport publishes no rider question bank.

Where these questions come from

Department of Transport does not publish a motorcycle question bank. The 70 questions here are original practice questions written for this site against the current Western Australia road rules for riders, with the rule cited on every answer. They are not the official questions and nothing on this page says otherwise.

The road sign questions, and the sign artwork with them, were written and drawn for this site as well.

The WA rider test format

Not checked against Department of Transport, so the figures stay blank. What that means is on the motorcycle index.

Why seven of the eight rider formats are blank here

Western Australia's detailed filtering exclusions

Western Australia sets 30 km/h or less as the filtering speed and excludes learner permit holders. Its published prohibition list is the longest of the eight. It covers children's crossings, marked foot crossings, pedestrian crossings, school zones, shared zones and every road posted at 40 km/h or below. Filtering also stops where vehicles merge, where overtaking is prohibited and on roundabouts.

Further exclusions concern what surrounds the motorcycle. A rider cannot filter between heavy vehicles of 22.5 tonnes gross combination mass or more, within bicycle, bus or other special purpose lanes, or beside a kerb, road edge or parked cars. Unsafe situations are barred. A motorcycle with a sidecar and a three wheeled motorcycle cannot filter at all. Breaching the rule carries a $100 fine and 2 demerit points.

The class R-E assessment sequence

Restricted class. The Western Australian restricted motorcycle licence is class R-E.

Combustion motorcycle limit. A learner approved motorcycle may have no more than 150 kilowatts per tonne and no more than 660cc.

Electric motorcycle limit. An electric motorcycle may have output up to 25 kilowatts.

Assessment order. The confirmed order is the Computerised Theory Test, the Hazard Perception Test and then the Practical Driving Assessment.

Power, capacity and the New South Wales list

Western Australia combines stated limits with an external approval list. The motorcycle is checked against the Transport for NSW approved list, alongside the 150 kilowatts per tonne and 660cc limits for a combustion motorcycle or the 25-kilowatt output limit for an electric motorcycle. These figures describe different motorcycle types and should not be merged into one threshold.

Convert the prohibition list into location checks

Sort the Western Australian filtering exclusions by the feature in view. Crossings and zones form one set, traffic movements and overtaking form another, and nearby vehicles or road edges form the last. The 22.5 tonne heavy vehicle figure deserves its own check, because no other jurisdiction names a mass at all.

Keep the licence steps in their published order rather than attaching a question format to them. No Western Australian rider test name, question total or pass mark has been confirmed, so this page states none. What is confirmed is the named sequence from Computerised Theory Test through Hazard Perception Test to Practical Driving Assessment.

Two figures belong only to Western Australia in this comparison. It is the one jurisdiction that attaches a fixed penalty to a filtering breach, a $100 fine and 2 demerit points, and the one that names a heavy vehicle mass, 22.5 tonnes gross combination mass, in its prohibition list. Keep the 150 kilowatts per tonne and 660cc combustion limits apart from the 25 kilowatt electric output limit, because they describe different machines rather than one combined ceiling.
