VIC car tests

Victoria is the one jurisdiction that makes a motorcycle learner wear a high visibility vest or jacket bearing an approved standard mark, and the one that bans a pillion passenger while allowing a passenger in a sidecar. Those permit conditions, the 20 metre L plate readability rule and the learner exclusion from filtering are what the original questions written for this site lean on. VicRoads publishes no rider question bank, so these are practice questions cited to the Victorian Rider Handbook and the Road Safety Road Rules 2017 (Vic), not the official test.

Where these questions come from

VicRoads does not publish a motorcycle question bank. The 70 questions here are original practice questions written for this site against the current Victoria road rules for riders, with the rule cited on every answer. They are not the official questions and nothing on this page says otherwise.

The road sign questions, and the sign artwork with them, were written and drawn for this site as well.

The VIC rider test format

Not checked against VicRoads, so the figures stay blank. What that means is on the motorcycle index.

What Victoria permits between lanes

Victoria permits a full motorcycle licence holder to filter at up to 30 km/h. A learner permit holder cannot use that permission. The restriction is also expressed as a learner condition: a learner must not move through slowed or stopped traffic between vehicles or adjacent lanes.

Two road positions sit outside the permission. Filtering cannot take place between a vehicle and a kerb, and a bicycle lane cannot be used for it. The 30 km/h ceiling, the rider's licence status and the chosen part of the road all have to be checked before the manoeuvre fits the Victorian rule.

Read it at the source

We could not open the Transport Victoria motorcycle road rules page from here on 3 September 2026, so read the lane filtering rule there yourself before you rely on it.

Permit conditions distinctive to Victoria

Approved motorcycle. A permit holder may ride only a learner approved motorcycle.

Passenger condition. A pillion passenger is prohibited, although Victoria allows a passenger in a sidecar.

Alcohol condition. The learner permit carries a zero blood alcohol concentration requirement.

Visible L plate. The L plate must be readable from 20 metres.

High visibility clothing. Every motorcycle learner must wear a high visibility vest or jacket bearing an approved standard mark. No other jurisdiction requires one.

Victoria's learner approved motorcycle boundary

Learner approved status is the whole of the motorcycle restriction stated for a Victorian permit holder. No capacity or power figure behind it has been checked against the agency, so the approval itself is the boundary this page states. Keep that restriction separate from the personal conditions concerning a pillion passenger, alcohol, the L plate and high visibility clothing.

What to study when no test format is published

Victoria publishes no rider question bank, and no rider test name, question total or pass mark has been confirmed against the agency. Preparation should not be built around an unsupported number of questions or a guessed score.

Rehearse the distinctions the permit conditions actually make. A sidecar passenger is treated differently from a pillion passenger. The L plate has a 20-metre readability requirement. Filtering is unavailable to a learner even when traffic has slowed or stopped, while the clothing condition calls for both high visibility and an approved standard mark.

Two Victorian details are met nowhere else in this comparison. Only Victoria makes a motorcycle learner wear a high visibility vest or jacket bearing an approved standard mark, and only Victoria pairs a pillion ban with a stated sidecar passenger allowance. Fix those alongside the 20-metre L plate figure, since a rider crossing from another state will not have carried any of them.
