From learner licence to provisional licence

In Victoria the Hazard Perception Test is the gate to the drive test. You sit it on your learner permit once you meet the age rule, and a pass is what lets you book the drive test for a probationary P1 licence.

Who can sit it, and when

You must hold a current Victorian learner permit and be at least 17 years and 11 months old. Every learner driver who wants a probationary P1 licence has to pass it, and some overseas licence holders converting to a Victorian licence must sit it as well.

What happens in the sitting

The test takes up to 45 minutes and shows 25 short videos of driving situations. You react by slowing down, stopping or keeping your speed, and a late response or a wrong decision means you do not pass. For the online test VicRoads recommends a desktop computer, laptop, iPad or tablet, and does not recommend phones. The result arrives as soon as you finish.

Where to sit it

Online through your myVicRoads account, under Licences and permits, then Register for the Hazard Perception Test Online. In person at a VicRoads Customer Service Centre, booked online, by phone or at a centre, which is also the route for taking it in another language.

If you do not pass

If you do not pass, you can try again, and each new online attempt is charged. Once you pass, you have 12 months to pass the drive test, or you must sit the Hazard Perception Test again.

Preparing, and what else the agency says

VicRoads suggests plenty of supervised driving in varied conditions, spotting hazards and talking them through with your supervisor, and reviewing road rules and hazard perception techniques on the myLearners website. Its three step habit is See, scanning the road for potential hazards; Think, planning your response; and Do, adjusting your speed or position. For the Transport Victoria practice tests, use a desktop with a widescreen monitor, check the mouse and volume work, sit somewhere quiet and update your browser. The demonstrations need real time responses to video, so they do not work with screen readers. Overseas licence holders taking the online test must have completed the learner permit test within the past 12 months and had their identity and licence verified first.
