Where these questions come from

Original practice questions written for this site. Not the official question bank. They were written against the current Northern Territory road rules, with the rule cited under every answer. Northern Territory Government does not publish the NT DriveSafe NT knowledge test question bank, so nothing on this page is the wording you will meet in the sitting.

Questions and pass mark: Being verified. No question count or pass mark for the NT DriveSafe NT knowledge test has been confirmed against Northern Territory Government, so this page does not state one.

  1. Question 1

You come to a stop sign at an intersection that has no traffic lights. What must you do?

    • Slow down and keep going if the way looks clear
    • Come to a complete stop at the stop line, then give way to all trafficCorrect answer
    • Stop only if another vehicle is close
    • Give way to traffic on your right and nothing else

A stop sign means the wheels have to stop turning at the line. Only after that do you look and give way to anything on the road you are joining.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: stop signs

  2. Question 2

What does a give way sign require you to do?

    • Stop completely every time, the same as a stop sign
    • Give way only to vehicles coming from your right
    • Slow down, be ready to stop, and give way to traffic on the road you are enteringCorrect answer
    • Keep your speed and merge into the gap

You do not have to stop if the way is genuinely clear, but you must be travelling slowly enough to stop if it is not.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: give way signs

  3. Question 3

You are on the road that ends at a T intersection, with no signs or lines. Who gives way?

    • You give way to all traffic on the continuing roadCorrect answer
    • Traffic on the continuing road gives way to you
    • Whoever arrives first goes first
    • You give way only to vehicles coming from your right

The road that stops at the intersection is the one that gives way, in both directions, unless signs or markings say otherwise.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: giving way at intersections

  4. Question 4

You are turning right at a cross intersection with no signs or lights, and a vehicle is coming the other way heading straight through. What do you do?

    • Give way to the oncoming vehicleCorrect answer
    • Go first, because a turning vehicle has priority
    • Whoever flashes their headlights first goes
    • Give way only if the oncoming vehicle is indicating

Turning right across the path of oncoming traffic always means giving way to it, including to vehicles turning left into the same road.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: turning right at intersections

  5. Question 5

Two vehicles reach an intersection with no signs or lines at the same time, and one is on your right. Who gives way?

    • You have priority because you are going straight ahead
    • The vehicle on the left goes first
    • You give way to the vehicle on your rightCorrect answer
    • The larger vehicle goes first

With nothing controlling the intersection, the give way to the right rule sorts it out. Slow down early so you can judge who is where.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: uncontrolled intersections

  6. Question 6

You are driving out of a driveway or car park onto a road. Who gives way?

    • Traffic on the road gives way to you once you have started moving
    • You give way to all traffic on the road and to pedestrians on the footpathCorrect answer
    • You give way to pedestrians only
    • You give way only to vehicles coming from your right

Coming off private property puts the whole duty on you. Creep forward until you can see, and let everyone already on the road or footpath go past.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: entering a road from private property

  7. Question 7

You and an oncoming driver are both turning right at an intersection, and there are no signs or road markings about how to do it. How should you pass each other?

    • Both drivers must stop and wait for the other
    • Pass behind each other on the left
    • The driver turning into the wider road goes first
    • Pass in front of each other unless signs or road markings say otherwiseCorrect answer

The usual method is to turn in front of each other, which keeps both drivers in view. Some intersections are marked for passing behind, and the markings win where they exist.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: turning right at intersections

  8. Question 8

You arrive at an intersection where the traffic lights are completely dark and not working. What should you do?

    • Treat the intersection as though you have priority
    • Get through as quickly as you can
    • Slow down, take extra care, and give way as though the lights were not there at allCorrect answer
    • Stop and wait until the lights start working again

With the lights out the intersection is uncontrolled, so the ordinary give way rules and any signs apply. Do not assume other drivers have worked that out.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: traffic light failures

  9. Question 9

The light ahead is green but traffic is banked up on the far side of the intersection. What should you do?

    • Drive in and wait in the middle of the intersection
    • Drive in because a green light entitles you to enter
    • Drive in and reverse back out if you get stuck
    • Wait before the intersection until there is room for you on the far sideCorrect answer

A green light does not let you block the intersection. Stopping short keeps the cross traffic moving when their light turns green.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: intersections and queuing traffic

  10. Question 10

You are turning left at an intersection and a person is walking across the road you are turning into. What must you do?

    • The pedestrian has to wait for you to complete the turn
    • Give way to any pedestrian crossing the road you are turning intoCorrect answer
    • Give way only if the pedestrian is on a marked crossing
    • Sound the horn and complete the turn

Turning drivers give way to pedestrians already crossing the road being entered, marked crossing or not.

Rule cited: Northern Territory Road Users Handbook, topic: turning and pedestrians
