SA theory test traffic lights and signs practice questions
All 9 original practice questions on this topic, with the correct answer marked and the reason under each one.
Where these questions come from
Original practice questions written for this site. Not the official question bank. They were written against the current South Australia road rules, with the rule cited under every answer. Service SA does not publish the SA theory test question bank, so nothing on this page is the wording you will meet in the sitting.
How the SA theory test runs: Two parts. Part one is eight give way questions with no margin at all, then part two is 42 questions with 32 correct to pass. Source: Service SA, checked 27 August 2026.
Question 1
A traffic light turns yellow as you approach and you have room to stop safely. What must you do?
Yellow means stop. Continuing is permitted only when you are too close to pull up safely.
Rule cited: Australian Road Rules r 57, as adopted in South Australia
Question 2
May you make a U turn at traffic lights in South Australia?
South Australia allows U turns at traffic lights unless a sign prohibits them. You must still start from the correct position and give way to everyone.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: U turns
Question 3
You are facing a red light with a green arrow pointing left. What may you do?
A green arrow permits only the movement it points to. Everything else is still stopped by the red.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: traffic lights
Question 4
What does a yellow diamond sign tell you?
Yellow diamond signs warn of things like curves, crests, crossings or merging traffic. Any speed shown with them is advisory.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: road signs
Question 5
What does a single continuous line beside a broken line down the centre of the road mean for you?
The line nearest your side of the road governs your movement. A broken line on your side means you may cross when it is safe.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: road markings
Question 6
You are approaching a railway level crossing with a STOP sign and no lights or boom gates. What must you do?
Passive crossings rely entirely on you. Make sure there is room on the far side before you start across.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: level crossings
Question 7
You reach an intersection where the traffic lights are completely blank because of a power failure. What should you do?
With nothing working, the lights give nobody priority. Slow right down and sort out the order with the other drivers carefully.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: traffic lights
Question 8
A yellow warning sign for a curve has a number shown underneath it. What does that number mean?
Advisory speeds on yellow signs are not the legal limit, but ignoring them on a wet or loaded curve is how cars run wide.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: road signs
Question 9
You are in the right turn lane facing a red arrow pointing right, while the lights beside it are green. What may you do?
A red arrow stops that movement completely, even when traffic beside you has a green light.
Rule cited: The Driver's Handbook (South Australia), topic: traffic lights
