A motorcycle learner test in Australia checks ordinary road rules plus knowledge specific to riding. It is not simply the car test with motorcycle pictures. Only New South Wales lets us measure the exact difference, because Transport for NSW publishes both complete question banks, checked on 28 August 2026. Other agencies do not publish enough detail for the same comparison.

The practical lesson is that a learner rider needs two kinds of preparation. Most study time still belongs to signs, intersections, lights, lanes, pedestrians, speed, alcohol, fatigue and safe road behaviour. A smaller but distinct part belongs to braking, cornering, protective equipment, road surfaces, visibility, lane position and carrying passengers. Start at /motorcycle for each jurisdiction.

The rider exam is distinct, but most of its syllabus is shared

New South Wales provides the clearest evidence. Transport for NSW publishes a Rider Knowledge Test bank and a car Driver Knowledge Test bank under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence, attributed to the State of New South Wales (Transport for NSW). This site's parse of the rider PDF on 28 August 2026 found 316 questions. Its parse of the car PDF on 27 August 2026 found 358 questions. No other Australian licensing agency published both pools when checked on 28 August 2026.

The section names show the relationship more clearly than the total sizes. Comparing the Transport for NSW banks parsed on 27 and 28 August 2026, exactly one rider section has no car equivalent: Rider Safety, with 33 questions. Exactly one car section has no rider equivalent: Seat Belts and Restraints, with 12 questions. Every other section name is shared. The rider syllabus therefore replaces one car-specific block instead of discarding the road-rules syllabus and starting again.

That substitution is substantial without being the whole exam. The Transport for NSW rider bank parse completed on 28 August 2026 puts 33 of 316 questions in Rider Safety, about 10.4 per cent, or a little over one question in ten. The rider block is 2.75 times the size of the 12-question Seat Belts and Restraints block in the car bank parsed on 27 August 2026. A rider must know motorcycle technique, but ordinary road rules still dominate the published pool.

What the published banks contain

The rider bank breakdown from this site's parse of the Transport for NSW PDF on 28 August 2026 is: General Knowledge 67, Traffic Signs 51, Intersections 40, Rider Safety 33, Traffic Lights and Lanes 33, Pedestrians 27, Negligent Driving 24, Alcohol and Drugs 15, Fatigue and Defensive Driving 13, Speed Limits 7, Bicycle Safety 3 and Integrity 3. Those counts add to the verified total of 316.

The car comparison, parsed from the Transport for NSW PDF on 27 August 2026, is: General Knowledge 79, Intersections 51, Traffic Signs 51, Traffic Lights and Lanes 45, Negligent Driving 29, Pedestrians 28, Fatigue and Defensive Driving 24, Alcohol and Drugs 20, Speed Limits 13, Seat Belts and Restraints 12, Bicycle Safety 3 and Integrity 3. Those counts add to 358, the verified car-bank total.

Some shared sections shrink in the rider bank, but signs do not. Both Transport for NSW banks contain exactly 51 Traffic Signs questions and exactly 3 Integrity questions, according to the parses completed on 27 and 28 August 2026. The 3 Integrity items sit outside both scored sections.

Pictures create a second boundary. The rider parse completed on 28 August 2026 found 144 picture-dependent questions and 172 text-only questions. The 144 comprise all 51 Traffic Signs items, plus 29 Intersections, 25 Traffic Lights and Lanes, 16 Pedestrians, 9 Negligent Driving, 8 General Knowledge, 4 Rider Safety and 2 Speed Limits items. The car parse completed on 27 August 2026 found 194 picture-dependent questions among its 358.

The Creative Commons notice applies to question text but expressly excludes photography, illustrations, animations and sound files, as checked in the Transport for NSW publications on 28 August 2026. Aussie Learner therefore keeps picture-dependent official bank items browsable as text but out of scored draws. The signs at /signs are original drawings. The rule conveyed by a give way sign remains the same, but the official PDF artwork is not copied.

What riders are asked that drivers are not

The 33-question Rider Safety section is the measurable rider-only block in the Transport for NSW bank parsed on 28 August 2026. It moves attention from a car cabin to balance, grip, visibility and exposure. Every one of the seven original practice sets, checked against site question data on 28 August 2026, also covers protective gear and helmets, licence and learner conditions, braking, cornering and counter steering, road-surface hazards, lane position and buffering, being seen, and group riding or pillion passengers. Those topics reflect decisions a rider makes that a car driver usually does not.

Helmets are one of the few useful national anchors. Australian Road Rules rule 270 has long recognised an approval mark for AS/NZS 1698 helmets, checked on 28 August 2026. Accepted standards can be updated or supplemented in a jurisdiction, so check the current agency list before buying. Learner approved motorcycle schemes also operate in several jurisdictions and restrict which machines a learner may ride. This guide gives no power-to-weight figure because a cross-border number would hide jurisdictional differences.

Why the road safety score is unforgiving

The New South Wales Rider Knowledge Test has 45 questions in two sections, according to Transport for NSW, checked on 28 August 2026. General knowledge contains 15 questions and requires at least 12 correct. Road safety contains 30 and requires at least 29 correct. Both sections must pass. The car Driver Knowledge Test has the same 45-question shape, with 12 of 15 and 29 of 30 required, according to the Transport for NSW Road User Handbook checked on 27 August 2026.

The arithmetic is harsher than an overall percentage suggests. In general knowledge, 15 minus 12 leaves room for 3 wrong answers. A fourth wrong answer ends the sitting immediately. In road safety, 30 minus 29 leaves room for only 1 wrong answer. A second wrong answer ends the sitting immediately. These stop rules come from the Transport for NSW Rider Knowledge Test page checked on 28 August 2026. A strong first section cannot compensate for a weak second one.

Noor's sitting: a pass followed by an early finish

Noor is a hypothetical learner sitting the New South Wales test. In general knowledge, she answers the first 12 questions with 9 correct and 3 wrong. She is still alive: 9 correct plus the 3 remaining questions can reach 12. She answers all 3 correctly and finishes the section on 12 of 15. That is a pass, with the full allowance of 3 errors used. A fourth general-knowledge error at any point would have ended the sitting, under the Transport for NSW rules checked on 28 August 2026.

Road safety starts from zero. Noor answers the first 18 questions with 17 correct and 1 wrong. Question 19 is wrong. That is her second road-safety error, so the sitting ends immediately under the Transport for NSW rules checked on 28 August 2026. The arithmetic explains why: even if she answered the remaining 11 correctly, 17 plus 11 equals 28, one short of the required 29. She does not get to use her general-knowledge pass as credit.

Her result is a failed sitting because both sections must pass, even though she cleared the first section. For another attempt, a sensible diagnosis is not merely that she missed 5 answers across the sitting. The useful record is 12 of 15 in general knowledge, then a road-safety stop after the second error. The separate thresholds and immediate-stop rules were verified on the Transport for NSW Rider Knowledge Test page on 28 August 2026.

What every jurisdiction confirms, and leaves unsaid

New South Wales publishes the only complete motorcycle question pool found in the national agency check on 28 August 2026. Transport for NSW also verifies the 45-question, two-section format and its pass marks on its Rider Knowledge Test page, checked the same day. The 316 published questions are official bank material under CC BY 4.0, according to the PDF parsed on that date. Use /nsw/motorcycle for rider practice and /nsw/questions to inspect the separate car-bank structure.

Victoria does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and this site could not verify an agency question count, pass mark or official test name on 28 August 2026. No number is substituted. The Victorian rider set here contains 70 original practice questions, including 5 on learner approved motorcycles and 5 on lane use and filtering, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Every item cites its rule and is marked as not official.

Queensland does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and an agency question count, pass mark and official test name remained unverified on 28 August 2026. Readers should confirm the current requirement with the Queensland agency. This site's 70 original Queensland rider questions include 5 on learner approved motorcycles and 5 on lane use and filtering, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. They are practice material, not agency questions.

Western Australia does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and this site found no agency-verified question count, pass mark or official test name on 28 August 2026. Check the current Western Australian agency instructions before booking. The 70 original practice questions here include 5 on learner approved motorcycles and 5 on lane use and filtering, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Each carries a rule citation and a not-official label.

South Australia does not publish a motorcycle question pool. Its agency question count, pass mark and official test name were not verified on 28 August 2026, so none is stated here. The South Australian set contains 70 original practice questions, with 5 on learner approved motorcycles and 5 on lane use and filtering, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. The questions are written against current rules, cite those rules and do not claim official status.

Tasmania does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and this site could not verify an agency question count, pass mark or official test name on 28 August 2026. Learners should check with the Tasmanian agency rather than borrow an interstate figure. This site's Tasmanian bank has 70 original practice questions, including 5 on weather and country riding, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Each question has a citation and is identified as not official.

Northern Territory does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and its agency question count, pass mark and official test name remained unverified on 28 August 2026. The correct response to that gap is to ask the territory agency, not guess. The territory set here contains 70 original practice questions, including 8 on remote and long-distance riding, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Each item cites its rule and is plainly marked as not official.

Australian Capital Territory does not publish a motorcycle question pool, and this site did not verify an agency question count, pass mark or official test name on 28 August 2026. Confirm the current requirement with the territory agency. This site's territory set contains 70 original practice questions, including 3 specifically about lane filtering, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Every question cites the applicable rule and is labelled as original, not official.

Lane filtering is the border trap

Lane filtering rules differ by jurisdiction and have changed over time. A remembered rule from another state can therefore produce a legally wrong answer, not merely a different riding preference. Do not carry a filtering rule across a border. Check the responsible agency for the state or territory where you will ride, and check again if your study note has no date. This guide deliberately gives no speed threshold, fine or jurisdiction-specific legality without a fresh official confirmation.

A good lane-filtering practice question should make the jurisdiction explicit, cite the current rule and avoid treating a national habit as law. Aussie Learner applies that standard before treating any filtering answer as settled. The topic receives 5 questions in each of the Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia sets, and 3 in the Australian Capital Territory set, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026.

How to prepare without learning the wrong test

Start with your own licensing agency's current rider material. Then learn the shared foundation: signs, intersections, lights, lanes, pedestrians, speed rules, alcohol, fatigue and defensive riding. Add the rider layer deliberately: braking, cornering, counter steering, surface hazards, buffering, visibility, protective equipment and passengers. If your jurisdiction restricts learner motorcycles, verify the current approved-machine scheme with the agency before choosing a bike. The rules matter beyond the written assessment.

New South Wales learners can work through the published bank, but should keep the scoring split visible. Practise general knowledge to at least 12 of 15 and road safety to at least 29 of 30, using the Transport for NSW thresholds checked on 28 August 2026. Do not treat a combined score as a pass. On Aussie Learner, picture-dependent official items remain for reading while scored draws use text that can be presented faithfully or independent artwork.

Outside New South Wales, use practice questions as a diagnostic rather than a prediction of the undisclosed exam. The 7 original jurisdiction sets contain 70 cited questions each, 490 in total, according to site question data checked on 28 August 2026. Mark every weak answer by topic, return to the agency handbook or rule, then try a fresh set. Use /signs for recognition work, because road signs remain part of the shared road-rules foundation for riders and drivers.

Common questions

Question
what is the motorcycle learner test in australia
It is a jurisdiction-run knowledge assessment covering road rules, road safety and rider-specific knowledge before a learner rider licence can be issued. There is no single national format. New South Wales is the only jurisdiction where this site verified the full rider format and a published question pool, checked against Transport for NSW on 28 August 2026. Ask your own agency for its current requirement.
Question
is the motorcycle learner test different from the car test
Yes, but New South Wales shows that most of the syllabus is shared. Comparing the two Transport for NSW banks parsed on 27 and 28 August 2026, the rider bank substitutes a 33-question Rider Safety section for the car bank's 12-question Seat Belts and Restraints section. All other section names are shared, so ordinary road rules remain most of the work.
Question
how many questions are in the NSW rider knowledge test
The New South Wales Rider Knowledge Test asks 45 questions, according to Transport for NSW, checked on 28 August 2026. It has 15 general knowledge questions and 30 road safety questions. The published source bank contains 316 questions according to this site's parse of the Transport for NSW PDF on 28 August 2026, but a sitting draws only the stated 45.
Question
what score do you need to pass the NSW rider test
You need at least 12 correct from 15 general knowledge questions and at least 29 correct from 30 road safety questions, according to Transport for NSW, checked on 28 August 2026. Both sections must pass. The sitting stops on a fourth general-knowledge error or a second road-safety error, so one strong section cannot rescue the other.
Question
are the NSW rider knowledge test questions public
Yes. Transport for NSW publishes the complete Rider Knowledge Test question bank under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence, attributed to the State of New South Wales (Transport for NSW). The PDF contained 316 questions when parsed by this site on 28 August 2026. The licence covers text but excludes official photography, illustrations, animations and sound files.
Question
how many motorcycle test questions are there outside NSW
No agency question count or pass mark is published here for Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania, the Northern Territory or the Australian Capital Territory because this site could not verify one on 28 August 2026. Each jurisdiction has 70 original practice questions on Aussie Learner, 490 altogether according to site question data checked that day, and every item is marked as not official.
Question
can learner motorcycle riders lane filter in australia
Do not rely on one national answer. Lane-filtering rules differ between jurisdictions and have changed, so check the responsible agency for the state or territory where you will ride. This guide states no speed threshold, fine or named-jurisdiction legality without current official confirmation. Treat a rule copied across a border as suspect, even when the riding situation looks identical.

How this guide is kept honest

Every figure above names the agency or dataset it came from and the date it was checked. Where a number has not been confirmed against an agency or an open dataset, the guide says it is being verified rather than filling the gap. Licensing rules change, so check the agency page before you pay for anything or book a test.
